February 12, 2015

Five years ago, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake shook Haiti, leaving much of the poverty-stricken nation in shambles. 500,000+ people were injured or killed in the quake and an estimated 5,000 schools were destroyed. Students were left without a place to read, learn, and grow. Five years later, they are still gathering in inadequate facilities.

Last January, I had the honor and privilege of joining an amazing team of photographers, videographers, and creatives from all across the country led by my friend Josh Newton to serve and love on the people of Port Au Prince, Haiti. It was an experience that impacted me to the core, humbled me, and shaped me in so many ways. I still think so often of that land that has my heart, even an entire year later…

So when Jamie Delaine emailed me about a BIG idea she and her husband, Randy, had brewing I couldn’t contain my excitement and was so thrilled to get involved! I’m so inspired by the way Jamie and Randy are pouring their hearts into this new project they’ve dreamed up – The School Sessions!

On Sunday, April 12th photographers from all across the globe are raising $200,000 to build a school in Mellier, Haiti.

Photographers can sign up to shoot one portrait session (or more!) on April 12th and donate 100% of the session fee. With the money raised, The School Sessions will buy land and build a ten-classroom concrete school to accommodate 220+ students. Ah how amazing is that?! Love this video that explains more of Jamie + Randy’s hearts and vision for this incredible movement…

How Can You Get Involved?

1. If you’re a photographer, consider signing up to donate a session on April 12, 2015. (Note, if you are unavailable that date you can still be involved! Photograph anytime in the month before + donate the fee.)
2. I’m offering a portrait session at a special rate on April 12th and donating 100% of the proceeds to The School Sessions. If you’re interested in getting some photos and helping an incredible cause at the same time, definitely get in touch!
3. Spread the word. Photographer or not, you can still be a part! Anything you can do on social media or in-person to spread The School Sessions mission is so appreciated.
4. Donate! This is not a “photo session only” event… you can still get involved!
5. Shop… 100% of proceeds from The School Sessions Store are going towards the cause and there are some awesome products in the shop right now!

I believe change is three part 1) acknowledging a need 2) rallying a community around you to help accomplish the goal 3) taking action. I’m so encouraged by Jamie and Randy’s hearts and the strides they’re taking to use their gifts to serve others through The School Sessions. What a privilege to come alongside them and 300+ other photographers (and counting!) to be a part of making Haiti’s future bright!!

  1. Linda says:

What an awesome thing you did to go to Haiti to help out. Although I already donate money to charity, I never thought of doing this kind of thing before to do photo sessions and then donate the proceeds to help others. Awesome idea.
