A Life By What You Do For Other People.

Personal

August 20, 2012

I rushed to the ticket booth as the dinner bell rang at camp meeting, the family bible camp we’ve attended for a week out of the summer for as long as I can remember. In a hurried mess, I dumped out the knick-nacks taking residence in the bottom of my purse, rummaging through old gum wrappers, pens, forgotten lipglosses, and hair ties in search of money to buy dinner with.

Just as I gathered enough change to pay for my ticket, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned to meet a wise face with a friendly, well-used smile and compassionate eyes that held decades of stories. He placed a ticket in the palm of my hand. When I offered to pay him, he put his hands up, then spoke to me in a gentle yet strong voice, “Just remember, you make a living by what you earn, but you make a life by what you do for other people.”
